8 Top Beauty Myths – BUSTED!

From side sleepers to facial steams, we’ve grown up with advice from our well-meaning mothers on how to best take care of our mien. Now, we dig up these old-wives tales and debunk common beauty myths to we’ve been led to believe all our ilfe.

  1. You don't have to use anti-ageing skincare till your 30s
MYTH! Women who have subjected their skin to a lot of sun damage in the first two decades of life — that is, anyone living in tropical Singapore — should start immediately, and preventive care is key even in your 20s

  2. Putting Vaseline on your face nightly will prevent wrinkles (https://www.realsimple.com/beauty-fashion/beauty-myths-debunked/truth-about-shaving-your-legs-moisturizing-your-face)
MYTH! Vaseline is one of the strongest moisturisers because it forces oil into the skin and prevents it from evaporating. The skin appears smoother, soften lines, and make wrinkles less apparent, but that doesn’t mean it helps in anti-aging. Only a cream with a proven active ingredient, like retinol or vitamin complexes can help in anti-aging. Moreover, the greasiness of petroleum jelly can also cause other problems such as clogged pores, leading to breakouts.

  3. Side sleepers have more wrinkles
TRUTH! Over time, wrinkles may be "ironed" into skin when one sleeps on the side or face-down for prolonged periods. But lines can be prevented and smoothened with the use of the right wrinkle-fighting products and treatments — including the use of the ELVi device

  4. Facial exercises keep your skin taut (https://www.more.com/beauty/skincare/skin-care-tips/13-beauty-myths-debunked/beauty-myth-facial-exercises-keep-skin-taut)
MYTH! While facial yoga and exercises do strengthen, tighten, and tone muscles, they DO NOT tighten the skin. Achieve that illusive V shaped face through using our ELVi device instead. Its microvibrations and light at 640nm frequency helps oxygenate the skin and stimulates collagen and elastin formation.

  5. Steam helps to open pores (https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/uncategorised/beauty-myths-debunked-130641)
MYTH! Steam simply helps to loosen the dirt in our pores, and do not have muscles or hinges, and no amount of steam or cold water will loosen or close them. The only thing that opens them is using an abrasive scrub on your skin. Our ELVi device instead uses heat to activate the heat shock proteins in our skin, allowing our serums to be better absorbed into the layers. At 42ºC, it is the ideal temperature for absorption into the skin.

  6. The pricier the cream, the better the results
MYTH! Often, a huge bulk of budgets for developing high end beauty products goes into fancy packaging or famous spokesmen. Big beauty groups sell luxury as well as mass market products; and the latter actually has the same technology as its expensive siblings

  7. High end skincare contains proprietary formulations
MAYBE NOT! Many skincare brands use OEM formulations and repackage the same formula used by many other brands This even includes some doctor-backed skincare brands. Even major beauty giants often don't conduct their own R&D. BSKIN, however, has developed our products from the ground up with our Korean scientists - a time and cost-intensive effort that took us over 2 years

  8. You know your skin is clean when it squeaks (https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/uncategorised/beauty-myths-debunked-130641)
MYTH! We have no idea where the term “squeaky clean” came from, but it sure does not apply to skincare. A good cleanser should never leave you and your skin feeling uncomfortable, and if your face feels tight after a wash, you’re either using the wrong cleanser for your skin type or overdoing it. Moreover, excessive washing causes our skin to produce more sebum, leading to even more breakouts. Use a gentler and more hydrating cleanser instead.
